Leadership failure rarely begins with collapse

Hi Reader,

Leadership failure rarely begins with collapse. Most leadership problems emerge gradually.

A standard slips. A difficult conversation gets postponed. Accountability becomes inconsistent. Communication becomes less clear. Priorities become less aligned.

This is Leadership Drift™: This gradual movement away from the standards, behaviors, and priorities that once made a leader, team, or organization effective.

Left unchecked, these seemingly minor issues can weaken trust, reduce accountability, impair execution, and diminish organizational effectiveness. The challenge is that Leadership Drift often becomes visible only after the damage has begun.

The good news is that it can usually be identified much earlier.

The first step is awareness.

To help leaders recognize potential warning signs, I created the Leadership Drift Self-Check™.

In less than five minutes, you can assess whether Leadership Drift may be affecting your leadership, team, or organization and identify areas that may deserve closer attention.

ARE YOU DRIFTING?

The Self-Check is free and provides an initial snapshot. Leaders who identify concerns can explore them further through a more structured diagnostic process.

The goal is simple: recognize potential drift before it becomes a larger challenge.

Because leadership failure rarely begins with collapse.

It begins with drift.

Keep advancing in the direction of your dreams and help others along the way.

A deadline approaches, but no one is certain who owns the final decision. One person assumed another person was handling the next...

The Leadership Drift Behind Turnover

Reflections on Leadership Drift The Leadership Drift Behind Turnover Leadership Drift This Week A manager sends a project update late on Friday afternoon without context. The message is brief, technically accurate, and operationally incomplete. By Monday morning, one email has produced three different interpretations of what should happen next. Each reading seems reasonable to the person acting on it, yet none of them align. Later that morning, managers reinforce priorities they didn’t...

July 4, 2026 Hi Reader, My annual 4th of July Essay ... America Isn't Drifting. Its Leadership Is. For two and a half centuries, the founders have been treated with reverence and reproach. They deserve both. That is honesty. They were brilliant, courageous, ambitious, and deeply flawed, proclaiming universal rights while denying them to many. Their imperfections do not diminish their achievements. They remind us that enduring ideas do not require perfect authors. The Declaration of...
