In this Reflections on Leadership, I introduce you to JACK. JACK is a four-part framework (Joy, Action, Care, Knowledge) for building a sustainable and effective resistance against authoritarianism by balancing personal resilience with strategic action.

Authoritarianism thrives on fear, division, and exhaustion. It seeks to overwhelm people into submission, convincing them that resistance is futile. Corrupt leaders manipulate emotions, distort reality, and wear down opposition until people either give up or accept their rule as inevitable.

But history shows that authoritarianism can be resisted and defeated, not through blind outrage or despair but with a strategic, sustainable approach. That’s where JACK comes in.

JACK — Joy, Action, Care, and Knowledge — is a four-part framework for fighting authoritarianism without losing yourself. It’s a mindset shift, a leadership approach, and a roadmap for meaningful resistance. Unlike reactionary movements that burn out, JACK focuses on longevity, ensuring that those who oppose corruption remain strong, clear-headed, and effective.

Why JACK?

  • Joy keeps us resilient. Authoritarianism thrives on fear and misery. Finding and sustaining joy is an essential act of defiance.
  • Action creates real change. Complaints and outrage aren’t enough. Purposeful, sustained engagement — voting, organizing, advocating — makes the difference.
  • Care prevents burnout. When the fight is long, exhaustion is the enemy. Taking care of yourself and your community strengthens resistance.
  • Knowledge cuts through propaganda. Authoritarians rely on misinformation, confusion, and historical amnesia. Knowing the truth — and sharing it — is power.

These four elements create a balanced, sustainable strategy for resisting authoritarianism without succumbing to hopelessness or fatigue.

This framework is helpful for anyone who refuses to let authoritarians take over without a fight. Whether you’re deeply engaged in activism or looking for ways to stay informed and protect democracy, JACK acts as a guide for identifying where you are now and how to move forward.

We’ll break down each element of JACK, helping you assess where you currently stand and how to strengthen your approach and provide practical steps for incorporating JACK into your daily life.

JACK and The Four Quadrants of Resisting Authoritarianism

Authoritarianism manipulates people into feeling overwhelmed, powerless, or apathetic — conditions that allow corruption and abuse to flourish. Resisting authoritarianism requires a strategy that sustains both the individual and the collective, balancing immediate reactions with long-term vision.

To effectively resist authoritarian encroachment, people need a framework to help them navigate the battle without burning out. That’s where JACK: The Four Quadrants of Resistance comes in: Joy, Action, Care, and Knowledge.

Visualize this framework as a four-box matrix with two key dimensions that shape Resistance and Resilience.:

  • The X-Axis: Personal vs. Collective Focus — Some resistance efforts are deeply personal (mindset, individual actions, resilience, well-being), while others require collective action (organizing, community, advocacy, and systemic change).
  • The Y-Axis: Proactive vs. Reactive — Some proactive efforts (long-term, deliberate, strategic moves) are to build strength and undermine authoritarian power. Others are reactive (responding to immediate threats, misinformation, or crises.)


How the quadrants map out:

  1. JOY (Top Left — Personal & Proactive) — Actively cultivating joy, hope, and humor as a long-term strategy to counter despair and authoritarian fear tactics.
  2. ACTION (Top Right — Collective & Proactive) — Organizing, mobilizing, voting, and strategically resisting authoritarianism through civic engagement and systemic change.
  3. CARE (Bottom Left — Personal & Reactive) — Maintaining mental, emotional, and physical well-being in response to stress, fear, and burnout, supporting oneself and those closest.
  4. KNOWLEDGE (Bottom Right — Collective & Reactive) — Responding to disinformation, calling out authoritarian tactics, educating others, and staying informed to counter immediate threats.

This model balances internal resilience and external resistance, both proactively and reactively. It helps people navigate the struggle without losing themselves or their communities.

Navigating the Fight

1. JOY — Strength Through Optimism (Personal & Proactive)

The fight against authoritarianism is long, and despair and fatigue are some of its most effective weapons. Sustaining joy — whether through art, humor, music, relationships, or small victories — acts as a form of defiance. Joy is not escapism; it is fuel for resilience. It keeps people engaged, hopeful, and motivated, preventing exhaustion and becoming apathetic.

Examples:

  • Surrounding yourself with people who uplift and inspire.
  • Celebrating progress, no matter how small.
  • Finding meaning in work, activism, or creativity.

2. ACTION — Strategic Engagement (Collective & Proactive)

Outrage doesn’t create change — strategic, sustained action does. This quadrant focuses on proactively building power: voting, organizing, mobilizing communities, running for office, supporting ethical businesses, and holding corrupt leaders accountable. It involves thinking beyond crisis mode and strengthening democratic systems for the long haul.

Examples:

  • Volunteering for campaigns or advocacy groups.
  • Supporting independent journalism and trusted institutions.
  • Building networks of accountability and leadership.

3. CARE — Sustaining Yourself and Others (Personal & Reactive)

Authoritarianism relies on exhaustion. Burnout, anxiety, and division weaken resistance. This quadrant involves self-care, but not in the consumerized sense — it involves sustaining physical and mental well-being so that you can continue to fight. This includes offering care to those struggling under oppressive policies.

Examples:

  • Taking breaks and setting boundaries to prevent burnout.
  • Providing financial, emotional, or logistical support to vulnerable communities.
  • Practicing mindfulness, reflection, and personal growth.

4. KNOWLEDGE — Countering Disinformation and Manipulation (Collective & Reactive)

Authoritarian regimes use propaganda, conspiracy theories, and disinformation. The Knowledge quadrant focuses on staying informed, educating others, and quickly countering falsehoods before they spread. It also involves recognizing historical patterns, learning from past movements, and adapting strategies to modern threats.

Examples:

  • Calling out misinformation and propaganda in personal networks.
  • Educating others about civic engagement, history, and political systems.
  • Supporting investigative journalism and whistleblowers.

Moving Between Quadrants

No one stays in one quadrant all the time. Some days require urgent reaction (Knowledge or Care), while others allow for proactive building (Joy or Action). The key is to stay balanced — too much reaction without action leads to burnout, and too much joy without engagement risks complacency.

This framework provides a guide for navigating the fight against authoritarianism sustainably, strategically, and effectively. Each quadrant plays a crucial role, whether through personal resilience, collective organizing, or immediate crisis response.

Democracy doesn’t sustain itself. Leadership demands accountability, resistance requires endurance, and — despite everything — joy remains one of the most potent forces against fear.

Sustainable resistance is a constant movement between these quadrants. Some days require immediate reaction (Knowledge or Care), while others demand long-term, strategic engagement (Joy or Action). The key is to stay balanced — too much reaction leads to burnout, and too much joy without engagement risks complacency.
